Self Development

Self Development, originally uploaded by Barbloke.
I recently decided to move my career in a new direction, after product, process and knowledge training for years I decided to move into skills and theory specifically around sales. I spoke with a colleague who already works in this area who sagely told me there was really only two things to do; a. spend years building on my own experiences or b. read from those who’ve already done it.
I don’t have years and thousands of pounds to spend on research so books it is for me.
This got me to thinking about how I learn and develop my photography, am I a book man or a learn from my own experiences and develop my own solutions?
As much as I enjoy a good book full of glossy images, would happily listen to a podcast on the way to work in the morning or even spend some free time watching a movie on You Tube there is still no replacement for the real thing. The amount I learn from an hour trying new things in the field or at home with my lights set up is comparable to hours of read and listening. The enjoyment I gain from trying new settings shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length etc all accessible at a moment’s notice in this digital age is just so much more powerful than ever before.
That is not to say I don’t use the book approach many a time I can be found with my nose stuck in a d book looking for answer to my latest query or Googling information on a new technique want to try. Video and particularly You Tube is a great source of information on post processing work in Photoshop and I’ve definitely found some invaluable information there.
Both way whether you are a book person or pick a camera and give a go person there is no replacement for self development, classes and courses have their place but for many reasons beyond cost and time they will never replace doing it for your self
Happy shooting and keep learning.
